The Truth About Music

"What's hot, what's not, and whats next in pop music"

Harris' Song of the Week: In Search of 1988 by Ozma

It”s March 21st and that means that my birthday was 4 days ago. As an homage to my 25th birthday, I”ve decided that my song of the week pays homage to my birth year of 1988. Ozma formed when I was 7 years old in 1995 and continue to make music to this day. In the year 2001 (when I was 13) the band released its first full length studio album which featured a song titled “In Search of 1988.”

If I were describing this songs sound to someone in 2013, I would tell them that Ozma sounds like a Motion City Soundtrack cover band, full of synthesizers and fast paced guitar work. Fortunately for Ozma, Motion City Soundtrack wouldn”t release their first full length album for two more years in 2003, when I was just a few months short of my 16th birthday.

Although the song is written in a very pop-centric style, it does last for over 8

minutes which includes several breakdowns and build ups. Needless to say it was never a big play on alternative radio. Still, it”s an incredible song and one that pays perfect homage to my 25 years of life spent loving and living the art we call music.

Please note that this version of the song is only 4:27. The full 8 version could not be found on YouTube.
