The Truth About Music

"What's hot, what's not, and whats next in pop music"

Harris’ Song of the Week: Price Tag by Jessie J

Are you ready for some straight up bubble gum pop. I’m talking about pop on the level early Katy Perry or Avril Lavigne. Let me be the first to introduce you to Jessica Ellen Cornish, better known by her stage name Jessie J. Becoming another in a growing line of songwriters gone pop stars, Jessie J has spent the last five years writing songs for everyone from Alicia Keys to Justin Timberlake. Her most notable writing accomplishment to date was penning Miley Cyrus’ smash hit “Party In The USA.” Similar to Bruno Mars and Skylar Grey who are both on the way to stardom via this path, Jessie J has turned her incredible songwriting talents into a promising solo career.

Her debut single from her recently released album Who You Are is Price Tag and features another up and coming superstar B.o.B. “Price Tag” has a very light hearted style similar to early Britney Spears but with a twist that only a british artist could bring. Her voice isn’t something to write home about but that’s not where she’ll make her living. The song is just perfect. With brilliant production paired with a super catchy hook, I dare you to not get this song stuck in your head.

One thing that really stands out to me is how these young artists are relying on one another. After B.o.B. helped launch Bruno Mars, they collaborated at the Grammys to help launch Janelle Monae into pop superstardom. Now, B.o.B. adds a perfectly blended rap verse at the end of “Price Tag” to help Jessie J get over the hump and join the rest of musics young guns atop the pop world.
