The Truth About Music

"What's hot, what's not, and whats next in pop music"

Harris’ Song of the Week: Yeah 3X by Chris Brown

Over the past two years, one genre has slowly crept in and taken over the pop world. Starting with the crossover style made popular by Lady Gaga, artists have spent the last 18 months trying to capture audiences by crafting a sound that is original, mixed with a club style. The latest artist to attempt this is Chris Brown with “Yeah 3X,” the first single from his upcoming album F.A.M.E. In an interesting move, Brown put his legal incidents behind him and didn’t address them on his first song back.

Instead, this song is a straight club anthem, upbeat from the very first note. It should be noted that the song will likely inspire fist pumping so if you find yourself near the cast of The Jersey Shore, I would be especially careful. Aside from his run in with Rihanna’s face, Brown has had a very disappointing couple of years. After the immense success of his first two records, “Graffiti,” his 2009 release was trounced by critics and listeners alike. It was also the first album without a platinum selling single in the United States.

“Yeah 3X” has spent the last thirteen weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking last week at #15. With the album still well over one month away (scheduled release date is March 22nd, 2011), it will be an interesting ride as Brown looks to build some momentum and help fans forget about his beating of one of America’s most beloved stars.

(Ironically, the video for this song, which I love, features Brown ‘dance fighting’ on the city streets. Seems like an odd move to have Brown punching the air, so soon after punching his former girlfriend).
