Harris’ Song of the Week: Coming Home by Dirty Diddy Money

Officially this is the fifth single from Dirty Diddy Money’s debut album which was released one month ago today. Putting aside the ridiculous notion that an album could rack up five singles in just one month (it took Lady Gaga nearly two years to do this in her debut), this song which resides at the tail end of “Last Train To Paris” is amazing.

What Rihanna did to “Love The Way You Lie,” the relatively unknown Skylar Grey does for “Coming Home.” Providing a gorgeous hook inside a rap song, on a primarily rap album, Grey’s performance really accents the rest of the sounds and sets the song appart from a mediocre album. Not only did Grey sing the hook, she also wrote the song alongside rap legend Jay-Z. Ironically, Grey is also credited with co-writing “Love The Way You Lie” and was nominated for a Grammy for contributions to the multi-platinum single.

Without a doubt, this is the most successful single to come from P. Diddy’s current project. Peaking at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, the song is an autobiographical picture of P. Diddy’s life and the loss of his close friend The Notorious B.I.G. It will be interesting to see if this is the top for “Coming Home.” I could see this song continue to rise and become a memorable song for the year 2011.
