The Truth About Music

Harris’ Song of the Week: Monster by Kanye West

A few months ago, Kanye West started quietly releasing songs on his website, free of charge. Weather this was a further attempt to repair his image or him flexing his hip hop muscles, the songs have been well received and have created huge buzz for his album release later this year.  Most of the tracks feature Jay-Z who helped produce many of the free songs. Our song of the week this week features not only Jay-Z but Rick Ross, Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj, who truly steals the show.

The song is a slow rap jam that features each of the artists breaking down their own verse. Although the first few verses fit really well into a well produced West song, Minaj goes over the top with one of her best solo rap’s of her short recording career. What makes the song stand out is the incredibly dark feel. From the auto-tuned chorus to the epic drums pounding at the end of each line, the song is mysterious.

One thing notably present in this song is a rap by Mr. West, something decisively missing from his previous album. Although he doesn’t rap too much on “Monster,” he does plenty of it on other tracks on his site such as “Devil In A New Dress” which opens with West rapping over a slow, string laced melody. What’s great about this weeks song of the week is everyone and their mother can download the tracks absolutely free of charge from by providing just an email address.

my favorite line in his verse is, “Have you ever had sex with a pharaoh? i put the pussy in a sarcophagus!!” and i know its him because he performed this song at the yankee stadium concert and he and Jay-z only did the first two verses…

I’m not usually a Kanye Fan, however, his recent runway video was sheer genius. He has proven to be very eclectic, and not just anyone could have come up with something of this magnitude… Love It.
