The What:

A short #musicmonday this week as i dont have a lot of time to delve into the song. But it is a song I’ve been wanting to do since I began writing these columns. This weeks #musicmonday is Chiddy Bang’s “Opposite of Adults (Kids)”. I first heard this single in the early days of this year, back around the beginning of January–I was immediately addicted. Harris, from this site, then came back from SXSW music raving about this rap band he had seen there. They are on the cusp of breaking and this could be a big summer hit.

The Who:

“Opposite of Adults (Kids)” comes off of Chiddy Bang’s first album “The Swelly Express.” The album itself is a narrative of how Chiddy Bang got into the music industry. Chiddy Bang met while at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The duo is made up of Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege (Proto) and Noah Beresin (Xaphoon Jones).

The Why:

It’s not very often that a cover is better than the original. While “Opposite of Adults (Kids)” is not a cover, rather a sample, when i now hear the build up to MGMT’s “Kids” I’m disappointed when it is the MGMT version. Remixing the key melody to the original is key to Chiddy Bang’s success with this song. It makes it fresh and brings more life to the song than MGMT ever did. Chiddy Bang seem to have found a great recipe, overlaying hip hop and rap on top of alternative songs. It’s a modification of the formula that made Gym Class Heroes successful, a genre that appeals to everyone.

The Song:

Dave Hitchings Wherever I go music goes with me, and I’ve gone far. From England to America, and a quick stop in Australia, the places I’ve lived have inspired and changed me. Each one has left their individual musical imprint. The vast difference between these musical cultures leaves me open-minded and willing.
My respect for music runs deep, and I want to share this music with you. …see full bio
