Harris’ Song of the Week: “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy

I first told you about this song on my top three songs of the week video last weekend. It was only a matter of time before this song ended up here and I couldn’t wait any longer. With Gym Class Heroes behind him, Travie McCoy teamed up with Bruno Mars to create one of the most fun jams of the years. Mars became known earlier in the month with his appearance on B.o.B.‘s “Nothin’ On You.” This has been a really good run for him.

“Billionaire” features a very cheesy lyrical story. It talks about what Mccoy would do if he was a billionaire. It seems almost comical for someone of mid level status as a musician to dream of billionaire when they are sitting on a great career. All of the superficial elements aside, this song is fantastic. It is extremely catchy and grooves so great in and out of the chorus.

With the comedic story line of the song, Mccoy does an awesome job with the rap in the verses while Mars holds down the chorus backed by an acoustic guitar. This song has the potential to explode as Mccoy’s first ever single as a solo artist. His upcoming album “Lazarus” is scheduled for release this June and features Patrick Stump, T-Pain, Danger Mouse and of course, Bruno Mars. I am looking forward to this album even more after hearing this song.
