Outlook to the Academy Awards: Best Actor in a Leading Role

This years field in the best acting category is extremely tight and quite intriguing. In the past, the award has gone to great actors such as Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman and in more recent years Jamie Foxx and Sean Penn. In order to win the award, your performance has to be career defining. The nominees for the award this year are Jeff Bridges (“Crazy Heart”), George Clooney (“Up In The Air”), Colin Firth (“A Single Man”), Morgan Freeman (“Invictus”), and Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker”). Without a doubt, the best performance of the year came from Renner in the movie that should win Best Picture.

The clear favorite is Bridges. The Academy loves to honor the babbling drunk character. That is not to take anything away from Bridges. He portrayed the fictional rock star perfectly. Another trend in the Oscars is to honor Hollywood veterans. To this I make the case for Freeman and his role as Nelson Mandella in “Invictus.” Although his performance was not as strong as Bridges or Renners, he is now a three time nominee and has never taken home the award.
