The Truth About Music

Harris’ Song of the Week: “Hurricane” by 30 Seconds To Mars

With all the Grammy talk this week, it is good to get back to music and out of the spotlight. The song I want to draw your attention to this week was suggested to me by Twitter user @NielsenDanielle. Although we both agreed that 30 Seconds to Mars isn’t for everyone, this song is a true gem from the veteran rockers out of California.

The song itself is over six minutes long, making it one of the longer tracks ever featured as a song of the week on our site. Opening with a deep, melodic piano track, Jaret Leto finally cuts in with his edgy vocals. With Leto in the drivers seat for almost the entire six minutes, the band provides a back drop to this performance.

There is also a version of this song that features Kanye West. Below is the original song as performed by 30 Seconds to Mars. Listen to the songs first minute. If you get hooked by the passionate lead vocals, you’ll enjoy the song. If his voice passes you by then you can forget the song entirely.

I agree. I actually heard the Kanye West version before the album came out, it’s good, but I’m glad that they settled on this version for the CD. It’s one of my favorites on the album (Night of the Hunter is my personal favorite – especially live).

I’ve been a fan of 30STM from their first album (self titled) and the long hiatus waiting for this album to come out made me a bit nervous … but they continue to deliver the raw passion and intensity that made me connect with their music in the first place.

It’s good to see 30STM getting recognition as talented musical artists, rather than just treated like an actor’s vanity side project. This album represents that ongoing struggle and fight – so I’m anxious to see where their passion will lead on their next album … although I’m sure it will be years before they release anything new ;)
