The Truth About Music

Fall Out Boy’s Epic Fail

In one of the most interesting progressions of my music listening life, the dial is finally starting to turn the other way. After hating Fall Out Boy originally my opinion them finally changed sometime after “From Under The Cork Tree” and continued on through their next album.

When the band released “Folie a Deux” my view on them began a downward tumble and seeing the band perform live a few months ago furthered this drop. At that time I laid out a Fall Out Boy recovery plan and from what I can tell it has not been followed (see “Advice for Fall Out Boy from May, 2009).
With that in mind the band is now set to release a greatest hit’s album titled “Believers Never Die: Greatest Hits.” The album features almost every single from the bands four major releases and a brand new single “Alpha Dog.” I have two problems with this project by Fall Out Boy. First, the single itself is dreadful. Bands have a habit for releasing bad songs alongside greatest hits albums (see Blink 182′s greatest hits album) and this is no exception to the rule.
My other issue with this album is that in my eyes they do not qualify for a greatest hits album. They have had a great run with some fantastic songs but there are not nearly enough for a legitimate best of album. Each album had one or two really good singles and often times one or two pretty lame singles and these are all included on the upcoming release.
Set for release later this month (Nov. 17) look for a lot of unwarranted sales and a winter tour to support the album. If your going to buy the album fine but let me warn you now, don’t buy it because you want to hear “Alpha Dog.” Check it out on YouTube and you’ll find that it’s certainly not worth the purchase price.
Once again, bad job by Fall Out Boy.

Fall Out Boy was good at one point, they are now on a pretty slippery downhill slope.

Aside from being one of the worst live bands I've seen, Fall Out boy have this unneeded arrogance about them.

I liked their earlier stuff, and there was once a summer I had that was pretty much defined by "From Under the Cork Tree." I had my love affair with Fall Out Boy, and it didn't take much to make me Fall Out of love.

It's mostly the arrogance factor that burns me, and it's not the band's fault. I think a lot of what I have grown to dislike about FOB is all embodied in one bass player: Pete Wentz. Patrick, Andy, Trohman… Sure, I like them all right, but Wentz… dives me nuts, man…
