The All American Rejects, Reject Album

Following up a truly great album is hard for any band. We will found out later this spring how Green Day will follow their biggest release to date and we already know that bands such as The Killers and Maroon 5 have been unable to match the success of their breakout albums. The All American Rejects released their first major album (2nd album overall) in 2005. The album went on to have great success, yielding three amazing singles which helped the album go double platinum (2 million+) in the United States and reach #6 on the Billboard 200.

Album number three from the band came out in late 2008 and was met with very mixed reviews. You can read my full review of the album from December by clicking here. I thought the album was mediocre at best and continued the legacy of having good singles but a lack of a complete album.

As we move into the last days of March it is clear that the people at the steering wheel are thinking the same thing that I am, what’s next? By this time if you haven’t heard “Gives You Hell,” then you live under a rock and we are all anxiously awaiting the next single. The question is, will it ever be released?

Early reports indicated that the second single would be the “Good Riddance,” type song “Mona Lisa (When the World Comes Down),” but this is now in doubt by most sources. The new single will be the much more upbeat “I Wanna,” the first track on the album (and my favorite song on the record). All of this points to the fact that their labels (Interscope and Doghouse) are in a panic. They know that they won’t be able to market another single to the success that “Gives You Hell,” has reached and they are in danger of the album being a collosal failure.

As of March, “When The World Comes Down,” has sold just 380,000 copies in the United States. The band has quite a ways to go before it hits the double platinum success of “Move Along.”
