Harris’ Song of the Week: F**k You! by Cee Lo Green
One of the funniest moments of my week was reading through the iTunes comments under this song by Cee Lo Green. One of these comments eluded to this artist being a Gnarls Barkley rip off. After a chuckle I realized that this might not be obvious to the casual music fan. For those of you who didn’t put it together, Cee Lo Green is the former lead singer of Gnarls Barkley. Although he lost Danger Mouse (the DJ who made up the second half of Gnarls Barkley), he hasn’t lost the ability to create amazing hit songs. This could be one of the most catchy songs of the summer/fall seasons. If it weren’t for the blatant cursing, this could easily be a #1 song in America. The song which features a great video (just like almost every song by Gnarls Barkley), showcases Green’s incredibly unique, soulful voice. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Notice Me by Alexa Ray Joel
Although the sound and style might be far from familiar sounding, the last name of this artist should arose your ears. Being the daughter of a legend like Billy Joel gives you a certain presence in the music world. Instead of competing on a show like American Idol, Alexa Ray Joel was a potential star from the time of her birth 24 years ago. The happy go lucky style of this song is something surprisingly unique. Although many artists share this bubble gum pop genre, this song has a very cool and collected style. I found it very difficult to compare her style to that of another artist. One thing missing from this song is a piano. The instrument that made her father famous and one that she is classically trained in, there is no hint of it in “Notice Me.” I’m very interested in hearing a full album from Joel. Her album “All I Can [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Brian Wilson by Barenaked Ladies
This is serious. For the first time in quite a few years I have a song permanently stuck in my head. Even when I’m on the verge, humming a new song at work I eventually revert back to this weeks song of the week, “Brian Wilson” by Barenaked Ladies. Although I cannot for the life of me remember where I first heard the song this summer, it has been on constant repeat in my head, at work, at home, in the morning and at night. It’s enough to drive someone crazy. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: “Club Can’t Handle Me” by Flo Rida
Although this song has been out for a few weeks, I only recently discovered it. Above all else, this is an amazing song. There is an incredible amount of energy provided by the three performers that took part in this collaboration. Aside from the song’s track artist, Flo Rida, David Guetta leaves the largest mark on this song. After producing the mega single “I Gotta Feeling” by Will i am and the Black Eyed Peas, he brings a similar style and sound to this song. Second is Nicole Scherzinger, who is most known for her work with The Pussy Cat Dolls. Her Fergie-like tone goes a long way to giving “Club Can’t Handle Me” a similar feel to the aforementioned ”I Gotta Feeling.” Still, this song has the ability to stand on its own. It is an incredible club anthem and should go a long way on that curcuit. The song is also [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: My Best Theory by Jimmy Eat World
Exited? I guess you could use that word to describe the upcoming album from pop/rock group Jimmy Eat World. After two amazing albums, the band degressed with their 2007 release “Chase This Light.” With the first decade of the century behind us, it looks like Jimmy Eat World is back and their first single from the upcoming album “Invented” gives me a lot of hope. Although they did not completely abondon the sound that made them so great in the early ’00s, they have turned the sound on its ear giving it a slight ’90s grunge retrospective. You have to assume that the band would get sick of a certain sound after a while. Instead of hitting the drawing board again, they gave the sound a little more dirty guitar and just a tad more echo in the microphones. This combination has made for a great first single in “My Best [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Ride To California by Paper Tongues
I’m really having trouble figuring out this song. One second I hate and the next I love it. Lucky for North Carolina’s Paper Tongues, right now I’m loving it. Although this is our song of the week, I’m going to start with the things which I haven’t bought into yet. The first (and most noticable) feature of this band is the unique style of lead singer Aswan North. During the entire song, it sounds as if he is screaming at the very end of his breath while never coming up short of air. If you’ve never heard the band before this could be the first thing that makes your ears twitch. The structure of the song is really fun and uptempo. From watching the music video, it seemed as if the band had thirty members. Checking the numbers, I came up with seven, a very large number for most alternative [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: I Just Wanna Run by The Downtown Fiction
It took nearly eight days but I finally found a song deserving of my last song of the week in July. Sitting down to watch the season premeire of “Jersey Shore” I was greeted with an amazing music interface by MTV which allows you to see what songs are playing during the episode. An entire season of watching the show online took that interactivity away from me. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Clap Your Hands by Sia
This song hit my like a brick wall. Stemming from Australia, Sia is a singer songwriter who has had marginal success around the world. Although I had never listened to her music, I had certainly heard of her before this single. What makes a song like this great is that for the first minute you can’t tell if the verse is listenable. It’s on the second run through the verse after you’ve heard the chorus that this song really gets going. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: “Perfect Situation” by Weezer
*Although this song might seem random, I’m photographing the band at Foxwoods in Connecticut tonight making it relevant* As a child of the ’90s, I’ll always have a special connection with four bands. Those bands in chronological order are Nirvana, Green Day, Blink 182 and Weezer. Despite my late arrival to the Weezer train, I have caught up quickly and they are a great source of personal inspiration (musically) and one of the greatest bands out there today. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: “Magic” by B.o.B. feat. Rivers Cuomo
It’s been a while and it feels great to be back blogging. I thought no better place to start the comeback than with the third single from B.o.B.’s debut album “The Adventures of Bobby Ray.” Over the month of June, this album has made its case to be the most celebrated debut in recent history. From his debut song “Nothin On You” which featured Bruno Mars to his chart topping “Airplanes” featuring Paramores Hayley William’s, Bobby Ray is on a truly magical run. Now with the release of single three, the hip hop artists shows his incredibly diverse style as Rivers Cuomo (lead singer of Weezer) provides the chorus in between some great rap runs by B.o.B. Although the chorus stands out in this song because of Cuomo’s amazing writing talent, this is B.o.B.’s true break into the rap world. Although his other two songs featured some solid rhyming, he really shines [...] Continue...
