Harris’ Song of the Week: Jai Ho by A. R. Rahman, Sukhvinder Singh, Tanvi Shah & Mahalaxmi Iyer
I have a confession to make. Although my Song of the Week feature always comes out on Thursdays, this weeks was decided much earlier in the week. In fact, it might of even been decided last week. Regardless, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pick this song as my song of the week while it was still fresh in my head. For those of you who do not know, Jai Ho was one of the songs from the amazing “Slumdog Millionaire,” soundtrack. Of particular interest is 0% of this song is written in english. In that light, I don’t know what is being sung but that goes to further how well this song is actually written. The fact that I can have a song stuck in my head that I know none of the lyrics to is a testament to that. It’s blend of soothing strings and high energy [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Deep Blue Something
Once in a while you just have to kick it old school and this past weekends song can’t be much more old school. If there were a song of the weekend this would be it but that just gets complicated. In that light, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is my song of the week because for two entire days in Boston it was stuck in my head. The song is a great example of what 90′s songs were all about. There is a slow, building verse that breaks into a huge chorus with at least one incredible hook. Meeting all those criteria it is easy to see how a song like this can get stuck in ones head. Fitting right in with other 90′s one hit wonder bands such as Eagle Eye Cherry, Vertical Horizon or Nine Day’s, Deep Blue Something will be remembered for only one reason, this Audrey Hepburn inspired [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Shakin’ In My Shoes by Van Atta High
Stemming from New Jersey is nothing new in the music world. It seems that every band and their mother are from the nuclear waste dump of the country, it must be all those toxic fumes producing some really fucked up lyrics. This past week a new gem may have emerged from among the piles of toxic garbage and that band is Van Atta High. Despite this bands apparent inability to retain members (4 of 5 are new to this record) they seem to have a feel for writing solid songs and have dominated their home state. With a national distribution deal now in place the band could be ready to take the big national step. Their latest album titled “Doin’ Something Right,” is now in stores and definitely worth a listen if your into the combination of whiny voices and poppy choruses. My favorite song on the album is my [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: The State of Massachusetts by The Dropkick Murphys
Once again, inspired by recent events my song of the week is from Monday nights concert at Webster Theater. The Dropkicks put on one hell of a show and started it off right with “Famous For Nothing,” followed by my song of the week, followed by “Johnny I Hardly New Ya.” This trifecta of songs was amazing and sent Webster into a state of mass dancing, celebration and of course, drinking. The song itself to me is the anthem of the band. It is such a fitting song for the group to play early on in the set and really fires up a crowd. The banjo line that runs through the entire song might just be my favorite part. To see more pictures from the concert be sure to check out this previous post. Florida is great, and I am enjoying the spring training baseball a lot. Be back to [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: High Hopes in Velvet Ropes by The Cab
Taking a cue from their mentors, The Cab filled their latest studio album, “Whisper War,” with interesting song names, and catchy singles. Hidden amongst the many singles on the album which include “Bounce,” and “I’ll Run,” is this really catchy tune. It combines quick paced lyrics with a really cool acoustic guitar part. Towards the end of the song lead guitarist Alex Marshall even does some soloing of the acoustic variety. The Cab is a band that has attributed their creative style to combining boy band with alternative group and this song is the peak of this style. You can almost here Justin Timberlake in the background singing during the chorus. Although many might here this song as being very overproduced, I beg to differ. Although the song is very over the top, it is an expression and a really solid one at that. For a band that could easily [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows by Brand New
This weeks song of the week has duel meanings for me. I have been writing for quite a while now and have really never given any insight on my past. All throughout high school I was in a band with a group of guys I would pretty much trust to do anything. Although we did very well on the local scene, we were never really able to break out and when college struck we went our separate ways. Although we still keep in touch, and have moved on to new projects, that band will always be in the forefront of my musical career. On that somber note, The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows was one of the first songs that we learned. It was considered an awesome achievement when we were able to stumble through it, having duel singing, and mastering the pause towards the end. Even in [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Monster by Meg & Dia
You’ve caught me. Once again my song of the week has been influenced by my week in music. Although I was appalled at the state of music during the The Take Action Tour, the ray of light was Meg & Dia, two sisters that rock hard. The song I have been listening to non-stop is ‘Monster,’ from the bands 2006 release “Something Real.” Although the band is relatively young, and have not had their big break yet, this song is waiting in the wings. Although it might not be the first single to bring them to the next level, this song has hit written all over it. Backing from a Gossip Girl could be just the recipe for this band to get to the next level, and this song should be the first one chosen. The song itself blends Avril Lavigne and Evanescence into the perfect rock song. Although the [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Ghost Town by Shiny Toy Guns
There are often bands that do nothing to impress you for years on end and then suddenly it clicks. It could be a song, or an album but either way you know that the band has what it takes. After hearing a lot of mediocrity from LA rockers Shiny Toy Guns, it took a single like ‘Ghost Town,’ to really make them stand out. The single is really catchy, but at the same time is very dark, all happening within what would be considered a hard rock song. Reminding me of a style portrayed by Avenged Sevenfold and Blue October, this band clearly has what it takes to write a hit song. ‘Ghost Town,’ is getting a lot of radio air play and could very soon find themselves on national tour. Although I have yet to be blown away by their other songs, Shiny Toy Guns have a really solid [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Jane by The Loved Ones
Every once and a while you have to kick it old school. You take a few steps backward and remind yourself how you got to where you are. For this weeks song, I have decided to shave a few years off, back to 2006 with a band that I consider to be the definition of today’s punk scene. You hear a lot of music, but rarely do you hear a band, and better yet a collection of Albums that kicks your ass as much as these guys do. The song “Jane,” from the album Keep Your Heart, was considered the first single and is a crowd favorite song. In the spirit of the band it is a kicking anthem that makes even the most docile human beings want to punch someone in the face. In fact I will go ahead and say that if you are preparing for a fight [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: The Freshmen by Mustard Plug and The Verve Pipe
I know what you’re already thinking, why do I have a song of the week, yet their are two different artists listed. This phenomenon can be explained with simple mathematics: Great Song + Band A + Band B = A classic song. Although the song of the week is usually the newest, hippest, trendy song, this weeks pays tribute to a song written in 1996 by The Verve Pipe. This song was first introduced to me by the other band of note. Mustard Plug, a third wave ska band from Michigan covered this song in 1998, in a way that was really their own. They were able to infuse horns and very upbeat lyrics into a song that is truly a somber ballad. It is interesting how two bands can have their own takes on the same song and come out with two completely different sounds. The Verve Pipe wrote [...] Continue...
