Harris’ Song of the Week: Crystal Vases by The Last Royals
Sometimes you can’t put your finger on what it is about a song that makes it stand out. This is the case with this weeks song of the week. There is nothing revolutionary about the acoustic strumming or bottom heavy drumming style. Still, there is something that makes Crystal Vases by The Last Royals a fantastic song. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Faster by Matt Nathanson
There is no doubt about it. I am a sucker for a perfect hook, sung by guys who have that whole singer slash songwriter thing down. Over the last few years I’ve run the gambit from Teddy Geiger to Daniel Powter. Mat Kearney to Jack Johnson. A few years ago, I had the privelidge to seeing Matt Nathanson live. While I wasn’t a fan of his at the time, his smooth style and obvious guy with an acoustic guitar appeal won me over. After his huge hit “Come On Get Higher” went platinum back in 2008, Nathanson hasn’t had a huge amount of success in the pop arena. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Super Bass by Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj didn’t hit my radar until Kanye West’s single “Monster” was released. While I can’t say my interest in her has skyrocketed since then, this song made me take notice. It’s interesting to note that while bread and butter for many pop artists in the hip hop and rap genres are hook friendly choruses, Minaj dominates this song with the verse. In fact, the chorus is rather forgettable. Many of her best performances seem to come during the verses while few of her hooks are memorable. It’s the same story in “Super Bass” for Nicki Minaj. Her quick paced rap lyrics entrance the audience as she inserts more words than any other female artist into a catchy pop song. Nicki Minaj will have a successful career because, like many other up and coming artists right now, she has true talent. She can do something that almost no other musician can and she’s [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Someone Like You by Adele
Throwing the word brilliant around is dangerous. Finding that perfect song, by that perfect artist is so rare. When I was in Los Angeles last week, I was really impressed by Dan Wilson, leader of the band Semisonic and writer of smash hits like “Closing Time.” He co-wrote the song of the week with Adele for her latest album “21.” Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Barbra Streisand by Duck Sauce
I’m assuming that my punishment for this post will result in tar and feathering, stoning with a finale of hanging from the neck until dead. I’m going to go out on a limb and admit that the onslaught of lyricless songs has finally begun to effect me. While I’m not a huge fan of this movement overall, certain songs like this one really get through to me. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: All We Need by Tru Fam Featuring Dinner and a Suit
The best music often comes along unexpectedly. This weeks song of the week comes from the rap duo Tru Fam. Based in New Jersey, Tru Fam are another group trying to bridge the gap between rap and pop. The song also features Dinner and a Suit, an alternative rock band from Nashville. From what I can tell, lead singer Jonathan Capeci is the only member of the band actually in the recording. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: MoneyGrabber by Fitz and the Tantrums
One of the first things that I realized upon returning from SXSW this year was a lack of individual songs floating around in my head. While last year, bands, songs and album stuck with me for week, this year it’s just the bands. And there are a ton of them. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Price Tag by Jessie J
Are you ready for some straight up bubble gum pop. I’m talking about pop on the level early Katy Perry or Avril Lavigne. Let me be the first to introduce you to Jessica Ellen Cornish, better known by her stage name Jessie J. Becoming another in a growing line of songwriters gone pop stars, Jessie J has spent the last five years writing songs for everyone from Alicia Keys to Justin Timberlake. Her most notable writing accomplishment to date was penning Miley Cyrus’ smash hit “Party In The USA.” Similar to Bruno Mars and Skylar Grey who are both on the way to stardom via this path, Jessie J has turned her incredible songwriting talents into a promising solo career. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: The Drinking Song by Moxy Fruvous
This week, I thought I would bring you a song of the week that almost every single Truth About Music reader had never heard before. I was first introduced to this song in a music theory course during high school. Ever since the first time I heard it, I loved the simple melody and the truly emotional lyrics. The song is titled “The Drinking Song” by Moxy Fruvous, a Canadian band known for their politically charged folk style music. Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: Yeah 3X by Chris Brown
Over the past two years, one genre has slowly crept in and taken over the pop world. Starting with the crossover style made popular by Lady Gaga, artists have spent the last 18 months trying to capture audiences by crafting a sound that is original, mixed with a club style. The latest artist to attempt this is Chris Brown with “Yeah 3X,” the first single from his upcoming album F.A.M.E. In an interesting move, Brown put his legal incidents behind him and didn’t address them on his first song back. Continue...
