Jay’s Music Video of the Week: Jack Sparrow by The Lonely Island
For those who have been avoiding Saturday Night Live, Andy Sandberg has recently begun a tradition of comedic music videos. I strongly suggest “I’m On A Boat” if you’ve never watched one of these digital shorts though this is the latest addition to the collection. Jack Sparrow features 80′s soft rocker and cinefile Michael Bolton who joins a series of guest artists including Justin Timberlake, Julian Casablancas, and T-Pain. The interluding movie themes will make you question their ability to come up with new material, but the song is intended as comedy rather than erudite music. The Lonely Island has a new album as of May 10th to add to their comedic collection. Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: Move Like This by The Cars
After nearly three decades apart, this release lacks the inspiration that is evident in their self titled release. “Just What I Needed” is unparalleled in their newest release which comes only two months after Duran Duran’s return with Mark Ronson as producer. While these aging rock stars certainly deserve a nod for their contributions to 80′s music, their attempts to cash in on the recent 80′s rehash falls short. While I’m sure they will see some success among die hard fans, the cars will remain classic hit makers who failed to recreate the magic they once possessed. Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) by The Offspring
Back in Middle School, there was no album hotter than Offspring’s Americana. Offspring had acheived commercial success before this album with “Smash” and “Ixnay on the Hombre” but Americana was their largest commercial success as they widened their sound to include more ska and alternative influences. Their album made it to number two on Billboard, with Pretty Fly topping at 53 on the hot 100. This nineties nostalgia openly mocked suburban white kids who listened to rap music thinking it made them trendy or tough. Malibu’s Most Wanted comes to mind, though admittedly I never watched it. Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: Say Hey (I Love You) by Michael Franti & Spearhead
Picked to be one of many songs for the World Cup, Franti has enjoyed serious success in the modern reggae community. The San Francisco based hip hop group typically focuses issues with social justice but takes a break for the sake of creating this pop hit. The simple lyrics and catchy beat carry positive vibrations that would thaw even the coldest hearts. Check out more by Franti to get a feel for his powerful political poetry. Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: Layla (Unplugged) by Eric Clapton
Although it’s been deleted on YouTube, I managed to find this video on a Russian equivalent and posted it here. For those who haven’t heard Eric Clapton’s Unplugged version of Layla, I personally think it’s better than the original. Ranked fourth on Rolling Stone’s top 100 guitarists of all time, Eric fell short of Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, and B.B. King. Considered virtuoso among Rock, Blues, and Jazz musicians, Clapton has played in several famous groups such as The Yardbirds, The Bluesbreakers, Cream, and even played lead guitar on the Beatle’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Although a superstar from my dad’s generation, tribute must be paid to one of the guitar greats. Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson
The bowling alley near my house plays music videos during Cosmic Bowling events and when the Michael Jackson came on, everyone broke loose. While 10 minutes long, once in a while you need a reminder why Michael Jackson was referred to as “The King of Pop” in addition to the other names he received in later years. I mean this song earned him his own video game for Sega http://youtu.be/lF89npFbn8g (2 minutes into this video there’s an awesome dance sequence). Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: Till The World Ends by Britney Spears
I think it would be hard to find someone with such a poor memory that they do not remember Britney Spears. This 90′s pop princess has recently released a dance album which seems like it could have been sung by anyone. The video also points to her fall from grace, as the background dancers take the featured shots. While the name will always sell music, I can’t help feeling that we should be able to expect a better product from the music industry these days. Didn’t she make enough money after selling out to Pepsi? Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: LSF by Kasabian
For the fans of Beck, it’s time that you’re introduced to the neo-psychedlia group Kasabian. This English rock group hails from Leicestershire and receives their name from the surname of a Manson cult member. The Armenian last name means Butcher or Slaughterer but has stuck with the group because Karloff, “just thought the word was cool.” Continue...

Jay’s Music Video of the Day: Cousins by Vampire Weekend
I imagine you’ve all heard of the catchy baroque pop group Vampire Weekend, if nothing else from the plethora of ads their music has appeared in. The video syncs well with the music as a series of snippets with long shots taken on the longer guitar licks. The energy created between the video and song will certainly wake you up if you were having a low energy day. Hope this helps get some of you through a long workday! Continue...
