iTunes Free Single of the Week: “Happily Ever After” by He Is We
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve written this column and I have a confession to make. While these usually end with a link to iTunes so that you can download the song for free, this one will not for a simple reason. This was last weeks single of the week on iTunes. Either way, this song very well might be worth a purchase online, or at least a listen on YouTube. He Is We hails from the great state of Washington and features the duo of Rachel Taylor and Trevor Kelly. What’s interesting is the gaping body of water this group seems to bridge. Halfway in between female alternative rock like Meg & Dia or Hey Monday and country superstars like Taylor Swift, He Is We has a brilliant overall sound. Full of hooks, their songs scream top of the charts. Last weeks single, “Happily Ever After” has the [...] Continue...

iTunes Free Single of the Week: “I Don’t Wanna Dance” by Hey Monday
Download the Free Single of the Week “I Don’t Wanna Dance” by Hey Monday on iTunes now Another solid single of the week for iTunes, this track helps to support Hey Monday’s recently released EP, “Beneath It All.” With a lot of previous success in the pop genre with songs like “Homecoming” and “How You Love Me Now,” the band is currently working on finishing an album to be released in 2011. In a recent interview with TAM, guitarist’s Alex Lipshaw and Mike Genitle said that the new EP would be “More organic, more diverse, every song is a little bit different. The music is more mature this time…” Although the single itself doesn’t quite fit this description, there is more diversity as you delve into the album. One thing that I love about this band is their ability to stick together and be a real band. Although lead singer [...] Continue...

iTunes Free Single of the Week: “White Lies” by Stacy Clark
Download this weeks iTunes Free Single of the Week, “White Lies” by Stacy Clark here. The last few weeks have featured absolute garbage when it comes to the iTunes free single. Finally as we hit the mid point of August there is another solid song back in the mix. I was pleasantly suprised to download this song by Stacy Clark, a native of Buffalo, New York. Her sound is similar to the hottest female artist of the summer, Katy Perry. For me, Perry’s sound has changed drastically from her upbeat, fun melodies in her debut album “One Of the Boys.” With far too much thought put into her new singles, I’m very down on her right now. Continue...

iTunes Free Single of the Week: “Break Me Out” by The Rescues
You can download “Break Me Out” by The Rescues for free on iTunes now. What a musical mashup this is. Very rarely does a song come along that has this many genre’s, vocal styles and musical arrangements crammed into one song. The Rescues stem from Los Angeles and have somehow found a way to bring together styles from all throughout the musical spectrum. The quartet of musicians created a song in “Break Me Out” that opens with shades of ’90s rockers Wheatus but somehow wind country, modern alternative rock, electro pop and even a little female singer/songwriter into a song that lasts just under four minutes. I’m still undecided if I like this song or not. One thing is for sure. Any song that gets so many genres so right deserves some hard drive space, especially when the song is free. This one is most definitely worth the download. Continue...

iTunes Free Single of the Week: Outasight
You can download Outasight’s “Catch Me If You Can” on iTunes now. Stemming from a town very close to my home in New York, Richard Andrew is the man behind the stage name Outasight. With music as a constant in his life, Outasight has an old school funky element to his rapping. With blaring horns similar to ’70s disco, there are clearly influences all over his iTunes Free Single from many different decades. The song itself seems split into two parts. There is the upbeat parts in which you have the horns, and a more intricate back beat. There is also a very grunge sounding guitar layered into these parts. The other parts of the song are held together by the rapping of Outasight with just a dream beat and bass line. There is something missing from these parts of the song. It seems to get boring for the minutes [...] Continue...

iTunes Free Single of the Week: Josh Ritter
You can download Josh Ritter’s “Change of Time” free from iTunes here. After a week away from this column, I thought it was important enough to bring it back. With hard drive space being so valuable these days, decisions must be made. Just becuase it says free, doesn’t mean you should click download. This weeks song is called “Change of Time” by Josh Ritter. Continue...

iTunes Free Single of the Week: The Band Perry
Download this weeks free single from iTunes here: “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry With a Taylor Swift look-alike at the helm, The Band Perry stem from Tennessee and bring the country twang to iTunes this week. With an EP that debuted in the first week of April, the band has a vibe that bleeds pure country. With a fiddle, high strung guitar and plenty of other southern gimicks, The Band Perry are clearly attempting to capitalize on the huge success of other country acts in the pop world. What troubles me about this band is the amount country in the sound. Unlike Swift and Lady Antebelum, The Band Perry are pure country and are sure to be passed on by most of mainstream America. Continue...

iTunes Free Single of the Week: Julieta Venegas
Download this weeks free single from iTunes here: “Bien O Mal” by Julieta Venegas iTunes generally releases a few songs for free each week. For this column, we always focus on the main free single of the week. I was shocked to find out that this weeks single was a Mexican artist and her song was entirely in spanish. Despite the language barrier, this song is actually brilliant. It has an acoustic groove that reminds me of KT Tungstall. If you can put the lyrics aside (unless you speak fluent spanish), the melody is very pleasing on the ears. Continue...
