The Truth About Music: Play It Loud

"What's hot, what's not, and whats next in pop music"

It’s Far From “Over” for Drake

Still flying high off the success of his mixtape, “So Far Gone,” Drake released the first single off his long-awaited debut album, “Thank Me Later” on Thursday. This track, “Over” is different from the rapper’s previous releases in that it seems the ex-”Degrassistar is really trying to show that he is just that- a rapper. Gone are the stylized and catchy hooks that find Drake crooning like an R&B star, and in their place nothin’ but flow.

“Yeah that’s right, I’m doing me. I’m doing me. I’m living life right now, man. And this is what imma do ‘til it’s over. Til it’s over. But it’s far from over,” Drake sings over a sick beat selection. There is absolutely no mistaking he’s a Young Money artist on this song.

Without the killer collaborations and sexy, stylized hooks, my first reaction to this song was just, “Eh.” But as usual, the more I listen, the more it grows on me. This is basically my overall relationship with Drake. I’ve had some trouble taking him seriously as a rapper, considering his previous gig was on”Degrassi,” the modern-day Canadian version of “Saved by the Bell.”

Can you imagine Zach Morris or A.C. Slater turning hardcore rapper? It’s just kind of hard to swallow. But the thing is, Drake’s songs are so damn catchy. While I wouldn’t put him in the same category as Wu-Tang or Jadakiss, Drake is putting out great mainstream music. He’s the hottest artist in music right now, and I’m pretty sure he’s right- “It’s far from over.”
