Kendrick Lamar Drops Uplifting Anthem ‘i’

Kendrick Lamar has set the ‘net on fire with the release of his new song “i.” The track, the rapper’s first solo single since 2012, has already garnered more than half a million plays on Soundcloud after being posted for only a few hours. Opening with a rousing, sermon-style speech, the slinky guitars of the Isley Brothers iconic 70′s hit “That Lady,” ┬ákick in as Lamar spits against-all-odds couplets like “Dreams of reality’s peace/Blow steam in the face of the beast,” that culminate with the chorus of “I love myself.” Judging from the single’s cover art, which features a Crip and a Blood making a heart symbol instead of gang signs, the emcee wants the self-love to spread beyond himself.

Although ‘i’ is Kendrick Lamar’s first solo single in two years–and despite no announcement for a new album, the follow up to 2012′s good kid, m.A.A.d City–the rapper hasn’t been idle musically. Along with assisting TDE labelmate Schoolboy Q on his hit single “Collard Greens,” he also made an appearance alongside Imagine Dragons at the Grammys. The Compton MC also linked up with Flying Lotus to the lay down a verse for the latter’s new single “Never Catch Me
