Afropunk Announces Battle of The Bands' Competition

The ”Battle of the Bands” competition for the 8th annual Afropunk Festival is officially open for all comers. Find out more details after the jump.

In true 21st-century style, the contest combines the traditional live performance format with social media.  The online side began back on June 25, and will culminate with live semi-final performances from July 23 through July 26 and the final battle on August 3. All performances take place at the Candy Factory in B

rooklyn, New York.

Bands who want to enter the fray must first register at and create a band profile. From July 1 to July 14, bands must go to the ‘Battle of the Bands’ Facebook page to enter the contest. The top 16 bands with the most online votes via Facebook will face-off at the semi-finals. The top four bands will be chosen by audience applause and a panel of judges to compete in the finals.

The two groups that come out on top will perform at the festival on August 25 and 26.  The first place winner will receive a prize package that includes a music video directed by filmmaker Terence Nance. Besides the comeptition winners, Afropunk”s lineup this year includes Erykah Badu featuring the Cannibanoids, Gym Class Heroes, Janelle Monae and Das Racist.
