Afro-punk Presents “Death To Hip Hop” CMJ Showcase

Although this year’s Afro-punk festival bit the dust due to Hurricane Irene, that hasn’t stopped the event’s sponsors from organizing a “Death to HIPHOP” showcase at the CMJ Festival on October 18th.

The showcase, set to take place at the Music Hall of Williamsburg at 8PM, will feature Death, Cerebral Ballzy, Ninjasonik, Jersey Klan and DJ Stack-Aly. Described by the New York Times as “punk before there was punk,” the Detriot power trio Death came together in the mid-70′s, blazing a new musical trail with their no-holds barred, DIY approach. The showcase will the band’s only appearance at CMJ.

East New York-bred Cerebral Ballzy specialize in 80′s hardcore  and punk rock, on full display on their self-titled release, while Ninjasonik and Newark based Jersey Klan mine a sonic landscape that is a mix of punk, hip hop and pop. Meanwhile DJ Stack-Aly will be djing in-between sets.

Along with the usual sponsors Nike, Boost Mobile, Harley Davidson and Sesac, Afro-punk has also partnered with Red Bull for the first time in its seven year history.
