Indies And The Underground

"Exposing New Music To The Blog-Reading Masses"

Artist Profile: Y LUV

L.A.-based band Y LUV have added their own twist to the typical west coast indie rock sound, combining energetic guitar roar with ambient sounds and the occasional dance-driven bass line.

The band, made up of guitarist/vocalist Freddy Janney, lead guitarist/backup vocalist Sam Nardella, drummer Marcello Dubaz and bassist/backup vocalist Luke Hanna, formed when the four were students at USC. Inspired by everything from Kings Of Leon to Kid Cudi, the group released two EPs, Nothing Matters and So I Play, in 2009 before unleashing How Chill Can You Let Go, late last year.

Produced by Josiah Mazzaschi (The Pity Party, Rilo Kiley), the EP has earned Y LUV comparisons to The Arctic Monkeys,  Kings Of Leon, Bloc Party and The Killers. The band does display a knack for keep their sound eclectic and melodic, with tracks like the light dance-rock of the aforementioned “All Night,” thunderous pop/rock ravers “Never Touch The Ground” and  “Be Free,” the spiraling, space-age sonics  of “Feel Sound” and the lo-fi grime of “Super Heavy.”

For their part the band says they don’t want to limited by any specific genre. “So many bands fall under the ‘indie’ genre or ‘pop’,” Janney says. “Good songs are good songs. We’re just trying to write good songs … maybe some great ones.”
