New Music: The Irrepressibles “Forget The Past”

The Irrepressibles, a theatrical ten-piece British band/orchestra lead by front man/conceptual artist/composer Jamie McDermott will be making their mark on this side of the pond with the  digital release of their album Mirror Mirror on August 9, followed by a special edition release featuring remixes by Royksopp, Hercules & Love Affair and Zero 7. The latest offering from Mirror Mirror is “Forget The Past,” an emotional slice of pop dominated by classical music sensibilities.

Somber strings mesh with melancholy piano parts and McDermott’s dramatic, warbled vocals. On paper this sounds overwrought and campy, but when executed actually comes off as unique and oddly touching.  While largely unknown in North America, The Irrepressibles have been making their mark all over Europe for years, with performances at the Hackney Empire, Roundhouse in London, a Roman amphitheatre in Barcelona, a 17th Century villa in Sicily, the infamous La Cigale in Paris, and two shows at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
