Jon’s Pick for Best Rock Song at the 52nd Grammy Awards
Best Rock Song. Not Best Song of the Year, but still a Grammy none the less. A coveted award, previously having been won by rock icons such as Bruce Springsteen, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The White Stripes, U2, and thankfully never Green Day. This year the nominees for Best Rock Song are: “The Fixer” by Pearl Jam “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight” by U2 “21 Guns” by Green Day “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon “Working on a Dream” by Bruce Springsteen Having taken this award home last year for “Radio Nowhere“, Bruce Springsteen and the East Street Band are no strangers to the Grammys and although they aren’t heavy favorites, I would never count them out. The Battle for Song of the Year at the 52nd Grammy Awards
I call them the big four. They are the largest categories at the Grammy Awards each and every year. One of the most interesting awards is Song of the Year. Unlike Record of the Year, Song of the Year honors the song writer and the song as it stands. Record of the year is to honor the recorded song and how it is presented. This year, song of the year has some great contenders. Below the fold we will show you each song and make the case for or against it. Enjoy and good look picking the winners in our contest. Harris’ Song of the Week: “Crazy Ways” by Griffin Anthony
Originally from upstate New York, Griffin Anthony has locked himself into a very unique breed of musicians. One spin of his second studio album “Crazy Ways” and you will hear this unique blend mixing hip-hop beats with quick catchy lyrics, all backed by a solid band with some impressive guitar work. My favorite track from the album is the title track. “Crazy Ways” brings you back to a ’70s style disco jam. The song reminds me of something that The Cab did a few years back on the song “That ’70s Song.” Despite the ironic name, both artists got it right, bringing you back to a very specific time in music. Anthony’s unique style in this song is most closely related to another fusion group from our generation. Gym Class Heroes have a knack for instrumentals and hip-hop and whether he was intending to or not, Anthony’s “Crazy Ways” provides a really upbeat hip-hop [...] Continue...

What is the Album of the Year: Is it “Fearless” by Taylor Swift?
The answer is yes!! After a few articles (see: Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Beyonce) in which I lead readers on and then smashed their hopes at the end I’m ready to say (with some confidence) that Taylor Swift will win Album of the Year at the 52nd Grammy Awards. “Fearless” is not only one of the best selling albums in recent memory, it is also one of the best. Starting on a soft cord, “Fearless” is a perfect example of an album that starts and only gets better. It has all the makings of a perfect album, and a type that the Grammy voters usually love. Winners over the past few years have included Herbie Hancock, Dixie Chicks, Robert Plant and Ray Charles. Generally, the voters steer clear of contreversey and vote for a good story or pure songwriting. Swift has an abundance of both qualities. The last [...] Continue...

What is the Album of the Year; Is it “The E.N.D.” by Black Eyed Peas?
Back in December (and in June) I wrote that the Black Eyed Peas and their album “The Energy Never Dies” was the best album of 2009 and that they got autotune right. It is a revolutionary concept album that made full dance albums a pop culture phenomenon. The album featured auto-tune being used in a positive way, making the music sound like a technologically advanced robot, on acid. That’s exactly what the band wanted. With a combination of perfect singles and solid fillers, “The E.N.D.” is an easy listen and puts you in the mood to party. Singles “Boom Boom Pow,” and “Meet Me Halfway” performed great on the charts and some might say that “I Gotta Feeling” was the anthem of 2009. Although this is my personal favorite for Album of the Year at the 52nd Grammy Awards, it is not the album I think will win in the prized category. Maybe [...] Continue...

The Songs in my Head: “Rain” by Creed
Spurred on by the torrential rain storm taking place right outside my window, I wanted to give some credit to Creed who have managed to release another chart topping single, nine years after their last big hit. In 2001, the Florida based group released the album “Weathered” which contained the single “My Sacrifice.” Although the song did not perform really well on mainstream pop charts, it did become the #1 song on the Mainstream Rock charts on December 15th, 2001. It is now 2010 and Creed is back with a song that brings you right back to the early part of the decade. The band has a keen ability to hold you back, building up the entire song into the very first chorus. When that first chorus hits you feel it from both a musical and emotional standpoint. This is a characteristic present in many of Creeds songs and it is the recipe [...] Continue...

What is the Album of the Year; Is it “The Fame” by Lady Gaga?
Just like Beyonce and “I Am… Sasha Fierce,” Lady Gaga presents a very tempting proposition to Grammy voters. Although this is certainly not the most complete project of the year, it is loaded with singles that broke records and shattered barriers for Gaga. Proving that you can sell records by scaring the entire pop music community (see her performance at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards), Gaga had the year of her life in 2009. Although this album is a step up from where Beyonce finished, “The Fame” provides little excitement after the big singles. A few hidden gems such as “Brown Eyes” and “Summerboy,” appear towards the end of the record, the middle holds little substance. Still, Gaga intrigues because I could see her sneaking up on everyone and winning in this category with the singles. Equaling other huge female artists such as Madonna, the singles “Just Dance,” “Poker [...] Continue...
