Harris’ Song of the Week: 1901 by Phoenix
Against my better judgment I went with a song that would be classified by many as indie rock by many for the song of the week. My real choice would have been a song already written about in the column. It’s against my philosophy to have a song of the week repeat so we’re left with Phoenix (Owl City’s “Fireflies” was the song in question). Going with the song I listened to the most this week, Phoenix’s first album to gain any traction in the United States “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” produced a true gem in “1901.” The song has a hook that is simply perfect and a chorus that never really kicks in. When your listening it almost sounds like verse-bridge-verse-bridge as opposed to an actual chorus. When the true chorus finally kicks in it simply the repeated word “falling” repeated over and over. The electro sound reminds you of [...] Continue...

Glee’s Move To Autotune
Who am I to judge? I can’t sing, I certainly can’t dance and I am in total awe every time I watch Fox’s “Glee” at the performances week after week. Something happened this week that almost no one has chosen to talk about; the introduction of autotune to a certain cast members voice. In one of my favorite performances of the year on the show, characters Quinn, Rachel and Finn performed Avril Lavigns “Keep Holding On.” A personal favorite song of mine, I thought the acting and emotion brought out in this performance was brilliant. What I didn’t care for as much was Finn’s vocals being run through a vocal processor, commonly known as the autotune sound. Made infamous over the past two years by artists such as Kanye West and The Black Eyed Peas, the autotune sound is clearly present in actor Cory Monteith’s voice. Hopefully he was sick [...] Continue...

Pictures From Silversun Pickups at Webster Theater

Windows 7 And the Worst Marketing Campaign Ever
We all know it’s true. Even hardcore Windows users admit that Apple is seen as the younger, hipper, more with the times company. Products such as the iPod, iPhone and sleek Macbook’s have given them this image but advertising is really where they stand apart. Over the past 25 years, Apple has changed everything we knew about advertising. Starting with the infamous “1984” ad featuring Windows as the “evil empire” Apple has always known how to push other companies buttons. Even their current iPhone campaign featuring the term “there’s an app for that” has been turned around by Verizon with “there’s a map for that” showing their superior coverage maps. Windows has taken it on the chin from Apple for years and in 2008 finally hit back. Their “I’m a PC and I’ve been made into a stereotype” campaign was a great combat to “I’m a mac, I’m a pc.” [...] Continue...

The Truth About Couples Retreat
After receiving generally negative reviews, I wondered if a cast that included Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell could possibly be bad. This week I went to the theater to find out for myself. To my delight, it was a very funny romantic comedy with all the trimmings you would expect from the two main men. Each relationship within itself is relatable to real life. Vaughn’s relationship is slowly falling apart as neither partner can make time for the other. Amongst the three other relationships the one that I love is Bateman’s relationship with his wife Cynthia (Bell). They are organized, in love and unable to have a child. There is just something about these two playing extreme OCD’s that makes this entire story light and fun. Although the story is beyond predictable the actors and actresses make this a good movie. It does nothing to blow you away [...] Continue...

The Truth About Law Abiding Citizen
Boring action dramas. Over the past five years I have been dragged to, willingly gone to and ignored, more action drama’s than I care to remember. Although I lost a lot of respect for Gerard Butler after he starred in “Gamer” he is back on my good side after an amazing performance in “Law Abiding Citizen.” Alongside Butler was Jamie Fox who I have enjoyed watching on screen since his dramatic performance in “Ray.” The pair create a really enjoyable relationship on screen and although they are at odds in this movie their interactions are very well performed. What made this movie great was the realism present throughout. Despite much of the premise being far fetched, it was still based in a world of real people and real stories. Many of the large plot points (people getting killed, etc.) were predictable but the movie itself was not. You were on [...] Continue...

Harris’ Song of the Week: 3am Spanish by Hockey
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, this weeks song of the week comes from an unlikely pop band who is about to emerge on the scene. After receiving their album in the mail I decided to play through it in my newspaper article. We quickly realized this was a really solid electro-pop band that mixed in hip-hop seamlessly. The chorus of “3am Spanish” is perfectly mesmerizing making this the best song on their debut album “Mind Chaos.” As everyone knows I’m a total sucker for quick and catchy lyrics. I love racing lyrics that just flow of the tongue and give you goose bumps because of their smooth presentation. I’ll let you go listen for yourself but the word I will leave you with is infectious. From what I’ve heard of Hockey’s latest album, it both describes the song of the week and the bands general style. Continue...

Pictures From AFI at The Webster Theater
By far one of the most fun bands to take pictures of, AFI performed at the Webster Theater in Hartford last night. Although I was not able to stay for the entire show, the band had a really solid sound that made me go home and start digging through their archives. The pictures came out great simply because the bands energy translates so well into images. Continue...
